Places to Visit in the Algarve

The Algarve is famous for the many Golf courses and the many beautiful sandy beaches on both the south and western coast.

You can’t drive for long before viewing signs for the beaches (Praia) long the Algarve coast, there is to many to list but can make an interesting time to search out these empty sandy beaches.

The most popular is Abufeira which is very commercialised but unlike Spain hasn’t been over developed and is still pretty, it has many restaurants and bars which are open all hours.

If your after a quite pretty local beach then I can recommend a visit to Carvoeiro, this place always reminds me of Devon’s Mevagessey fishing village.

Known to the Arabs as Xelb, it was a flourishing town and  it became the Moorish capital of the Algarve.

Silves is worth a visit with its own medieval castle that has been restored and the towns Gothic Cathedral which date from the 13th century, plus the town itself is very quaint and offers a good walk to its many cafes and restaurants.

Serra de Monchique is the Algarve’s largest mountain area being nearly a 1000 metres up. At Foia, the highest point, it offers amazing views of the coast line including the large town Portimao, you can also view the outline of the Algarve’s race circuit.

This is a huge tourist development with a marina. Developed in the 1960’s, there are many luxurious hotels, restaurants and bars. The town is known for its lively nightlife, with a range of bars and clubs for all tastes.

If you walk slightly inland off the Marina prom, this is where the Portuguse and British menu Steakhouses offer cheaper and quality food/drinks.

Go-Cart Race Circuit;

At the Portimao race circuit they have the addition of a purpose made Go-Cart track (in fact two side by side)

For only 25 euros you can have a 20 minute session aboard there own hire Go-carts, which is great fun for all.

Zip Wire ride;

There is a Zip Wire that travels between the boarders of Spain and Portugal. It located on the Spanish side of the river Guadiana in a town called Sanlucar de Guadiana. This is only 55 miles from Loule after just crossing the motorway bridge into Spain.

The cost is only 15 euros and for this they offer a Land rover ride to the start of the Zip Wire, then a safe and easy wire ride across the river plus the return ferry ride back from Alcoutim (Portugal). Very pleasant, if not quite a white knuckle ride you might first think.

Perhaps the finest town in the region is Tavira, known as ’the Venice of the Algarve’ for its many bridges and cannels. The pastel-coloured patrician’s houses reflects the towns former wealth.
